I’m Susan Minarik, the founder of Positive-Living-Now, and I want to talk with you for a moment about my Life Coaching services—and why working with me as your life coach may be right for you.
When people learn that I’m a Life Coach, most of them are curious about what a life coach does and why someone would want to hire one. Or they may think I’m a mentor or trainer of some kind and they’ll ask what I teach people to do.
So I thought I’d tell you a little bit about my service and offer you a complementary program to experience for yourself how life coaching can help you optimize your potential to realize your values, goals and dreams.
What, Exactly, is Life Coaching?
Life coaching is an ongoing partnership between a trained professional coach and a client that allows you to discover powerful new possibilities for your life, and that opens doors to your own wisdom and sense of direction.
It gives you renewed control over your life and a clarity about the direction you want to be going. It moves you past your “stuck places,” and supports you in making the choices that will lead you toward fulfilling your dreams, values and goals with charged momentum.
Above all, coaching is a partnership. And the clients call the shots. As a coaching client, guided by the coach, you decide what aspects of your life to focus on; you explore the possible paths before you; you choose which options to put into action. My role, as your coach, is to guide you in figuring those things out—and then to support you and hold you accountable as you take the actions that you decide are the right ones for you.
Coaching is not therapy. You don’t dwell on the past; you look toward the future, deciding what you can do to create the kind of future you want for yourself. As a positive psychology life coach, I help clients identify the unique personal strengths they have at their disposal for creating that future in the most enjoyable, energized and scientifically validated ways.
Life Coaching isn’t counseling, or mentoring, or advising. It’s not yet another voice telling you what to do. You are the one with the answers. My role, as your coach, is to help you discover them and put them to work in your life.
What Kinds of Problems Does Life Coaching Address?
We humans can get stuck in all kinds of different places in our lives. But stuck is stuck, and my job as your coach is to help you move forward regardless of what is holding you back.
Sometimes people sense that their lives just aren’t working, but they’re not quite sure where the problem lies. Sometimes they know exactly what they want to change, but aren’t clear about how to go about it and where to begin.
Help With Concrete Situations . . .
People find life coaching to be a big help with concrete situations such as:
- Making a career transition,
- Doing a better job of handling their finances,
- Improving their health,
- Improving their relationships,
- Becoming more productive, or
- Making a decision about what path to explore next in their lives.
. . . and With the Intangible Parts of Life
People also find that coaching is a big help with less tangible parts of their lives, such as:
- Coping with the stress of a life-stage or change that they’re going through–divorce, an “empty nest,” retirement, relocation,
- Overcoming the overwhelm of a high-demand life,
- Finding more meaning or satisfaction in life, or
- Deepening their spirituality.
What Happens in a Life-Coaching Session?
Every coaching session is unique. But always, the content of your coaching session is dictated by the issues and concerns that you want to address.
You’ll share where you want to focus during our session and, together, we’ll explore those issues to clarify what’s really going on, and to discover what options are available for you and which of them feels most comfortable, effective, and attractive.
Sometimes I may invite you to complete an assessment—a kind of quiz developed by positive psychologists—to help us more clearly see where your interests, personal strengths or resources are strong.
Sometimes we’ll brainstorm together.
As my client, you can expect me to ask a lot of questions to stimulate and clarify your thinking, to help you discover new ideas, to sort out challenges and options, and to look at things from a fresh perspective.
Lots of light bulbs tend to go off during this process. My clients find our sessions warm, fun, meaningful, rich and energizing.
As the session wraps up, we’ll decide what actions you will take before our next session and I’ll ask for your commitment to do them. That’s your “homework.” And you can count on me to hold you accountable, celebrating your successes and helping you figure out what got in your way when things didn’t work out as you expected.
Why Consider Me as Your Life Coach?
Well, first of all, because I’m warm, insightful, and a lot of fun! I’ll listen to you with empathy, good will and respect.
Secondly, as a positive psychology life coach, my training is rooted in rigorous scientific studies about what really works in moving people toward their goals. My goal is to get you results!
You, as the client, need to feel that your coach has the know-how, training, experience and insight to guide you well. In addition to in-depth studies in psychology at Michigan State University and Saginaw State University, I’ve been an ardent student of psychology, personal development, and metaphysics throughout my entire life (which, as you can tell by my photo, didn’t begin quite yesterday. I’ve been around . . . and around!)
As my writing here at Positive-Living-Now shows, I continue to research those areas, and to apply them to my own life.
I am a Certified Professional Coach through the Fowler-Wainwright International Institute of Coaching and have completed my training in Positive Psychology Coaching under Robert Biswas-Diener, a recognized leader in the field. I’m currently working toward additional certification with Mentor Coach, an International Coaching Federation Accredited Coach Training Program that’s world-recognized in professional coach development.
But to be honest, it’s not the credentials that count. It’s the results you’ll get from our partnership that matter.
Can I promise that you’ll get what you’re seeking through coaching? No. Nobody can promise that—especially since the choices and actions involved are up to you. But I can give you pretty good odds. And I can promise to make our time together worthwhile.
You and your coach have to “click.” You need to feel at ease with each other. That’s what my complementary “Pathways to Possibilities Program” is for. It lets you get a taste of my coaching style, and it lets us both see if we’re a good “fit” for each other and if we think partnering together will take you where you want to go.
